Things to Do With Toddlers in Sunningdale

The paved walkways around the Intaka Island canals are flat, shaded and dotted with benches. Toddlers love watching the coots and moorhens paddle between the reeds. The loop is short — about 20 minutes at toddler pace — so it never turns into a marathon. There is a spur-and-mash stall near the bridge if bribery is required.

A quiet, grassy strip that runs behind parts of Sunningdale, popular with local dog walkers and mums with pushchairs. The ground is level, there are no roads to cross, and the trees give good shade after 10 a.m. Bring a blanket and a few books for a lazy outdoor story time.

The small fenced play structure near the food court entrance is ideal for 18-month-olds up to about 3 years. It is free, has rubber flooring, and is close enough to a Woolworths cafe that you can grab a coffee without losing sight of the gate. Best visited weekday mornings before the shopping crowds arrive.

Technically Big Bay, but only a 5-minute drive from Sunningdale. The southern end near the lifesaving club has the firmest sand and the calmest shallows. On windless mornings the water is glassy and warm enough for tiny toes. There is a rinse tap and public toilets at the parking area.

Hillcrest opens its lawns to families on weekend mornings. The grass is soft, the gardens are enclosed, and there is plenty of space to run without bothering the restaurant guests. The toy box near the veranda is a nice bonus. Call ahead to confirm they are open for lawn picnics.

Right in the heart of Sunningdale on Leadville Way, this fenced dog park is a hidden gem for little animal lovers. Separated sections for different sized dogs mean toddlers can watch safely from the sidelines, and the on-site Reload espresso bar serves good coffee and light food while the kids press their noses to the fence.
