Things to Do With Toddlers in Melkbosstrand

The sand here is famously flat and compact — ideal for wobbly first steps and plastic-wheeled prams. The shoreline shelves very gradually, so toddlers can paddle without sudden drops. On calm days the water is clear enough to spot little fish. Arrive before 10 a.m. on weekends to get parking close to the grass verge.

A long wooden walkway that runs behind the dunes from the main beach towards Blouberg. It is wide, level, and shaded by beach thorn trees in sections. Toddlers love the feeling of being 'up high' above the sand, and the benches every 50 metres mean you can stop for a snack without sitting directly on the beach.

At low tide the rocks at the northern end of Melkbosstrand form warm, shallow pools that are perfect for 1- to 3-year-olds. The water heats up quickly in the sun and there are no waves to knock them over. Bring a net and a bucket — there are always tiny crabs and periwinkles to inspect.

The first 500 metres of the Blaauwberg trail are wide, sandy and manageable with an all-terrain stroller. The views across Table Bay are spectacular, and the fynbos is low enough that toddlers can see lizards and grassbirds at eye level. Turn back at the first bench if little legs tire — you have already seen the best of the view.

A small, fenced park behind the shops on Koeberg Road with a toddler-friendly roundabout, a low slide, and shaded benches. It is rarely crowded on weekdays and there is an ice-cream shop two doors down. A reliable backup plan when the wind picks up and the beach becomes uncomfortable.

If you have a Wild Card or day permit, the Koeberg reserve has a 3-kilometre loop that is wide enough for a stroller and quiet enough to spot tortoises and bontebok. The terrain is sandy gravel, so a three-wheeler pram works best. There are no shops inside, so pack water and rusks.
